Phonetic Symbol (IPA)

Assalamualaikum Wr. Wb ..
Hello guys ...

In this Phonetic ...
We'll learn about Phonetic Symbol or International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).

What is Phonetic?

Phonetic is basic in linguistic which study how to pronounce sounds and the sound not change the meaning and the function of a word.

What is Phonetic Symbol?

Phonetic symbol or International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) Is the visual representation of speech sounds.

In the Phonetic symbol we learn about Vowel. A vowel is sound produced with a comparatively open configuration of the vocal tract. Vowels are two types:

1. Monophthong (Single vowel)

      1. ᴂ  = Apple and Sat

      2. e / ԑ: = Ten and Bed / Her and Word

      3. i / i: = Me and See / Happy and Very

      4. ɪ = Sit and Hit

      5. u: = You and Too

      6. ʊ =Put and Food

      7. ə = Mirror and About

      8. ɑ:  = Far and Car

      9. Ʌ = Up, Above, and Love

      10. ɔ: = Fought, Law, and Door

      11. ɒ = Hot, On, and What

2. Diphthong (Double vowel)

     1. eɪ = Hey, Way, and Say

     2. aɪ = My, Eye, and Shy

     3. aʊ = Go, No, and Low

     4. ɑʊ = How, Now, and Cow

     5. ɔɪ = Boy, Toy, and Joy

Okay guys, I think it's enough for today to give you a little bit about phonetic symbol (Vowel) and the example. So see you in my next post:)
  Assalamualaikum Wr. wb :)

    2. IPA's a recent variation - 19th century - since that's when international relations began. There's apparently older versions: palaeotype alphabet, which evolves to romic then phonotypic and eventually IPA. Why did they change?

    3. In 1886, a group of French and British language teachers, led by the French linguist Paul Passy, formed what would come to be known from 1897 onwards as the International Phonetic Association (in French, l'Association phonétique internationale). Their original alphabet was based on a spelling reform for English known as the Romic alphabet, but in order to make it usable for other languages, the values of the symbols were allowed to vary from language to language. For example, the sound [ʃ] (the sh in shoe) was originally represented with the letter ⟨c⟩ in English, but with the digraph ⟨ch⟩ in French. However, in 1888, the alphabet was revised so as to be uniform across languages, thus providing the base for all future revisions. The idea of making the IPA was first suggested by Otto Jespersen in a letter to Paul Passy. It was developed by Alexander John Ellis, Henry Sweet, Daniel Jones, and Passy.

    1. No, every word has a different when is spoken or is said.
And there is no word has a same in sound but maybe has a simillar sound.

    1. Kinda but it's worth it if you wanna sound awesome

      https://coljour.wordpress.com/2018/11/14/why-do-we-even-need-phonetics/

      Hapus
    2. No, actually dipthong isn't difficult to learned even we use dipthong in our daily activity. Because there are few words dipthong in it.

      Hapus
  6. why we should leran about phonetic ? and what the different between diphthong and monophthong?

    BalasHapus
    Balasan
    1. I wrote about why we should learn about phonetics here: https://coljour.wordpress.com/2018/11/14/why-do-we-even-need-phonetics/

      As for your second question, it's self-explanatory. Mono's single/1, diphtjong's double/2. a vs ae.

      Hapus
    2. Thankyou tatum who helped me for give the explanation about it.

We should learn about phonetic because phonetic learn about sounds. Here, not only sounds but also learn all of energies of sounds such as syllabel, stress, consonant classification, vocal classification in others and it's important in pronounciation, so we should learn about phonetic.

      For different monopthong and dipthong.

Monophthong is simply a vowel. The word monophthong comes from the old Greek language.

A Diphthong is a vowel that a person has to move his or her mouth into two different positions to make.

  7. what the function of phonetic in our daily life?

    BalasHapus
    Balasan
    1. It's not necessarily a tool that functions as something so much as it's a feature/characteristic of the language you use every day. You should word it as benefit, and to answer that, if you master the way you produce sounds your pronunciations will always be clear; not correct as that depends on your recall of the symbols

      Hapus
    2. Actually, just a little function because phonetic is a sound without a meaning. Phonetic just about sound in a word and we have known the sound because we have used it in our daily activity .

    1. What did you mean ? Can you give comment spesificly

      Hapus
  9. Balasan
    1. When you speak in english, your pronounciation will need it and when it happens so you will use it.

      Hapus
  10. What is monophthong and diphthong?

    BalasHapus
    Balasan
    1. Actually I have explained it in the before comment, but it's okay . Here I'll explain it again.

Monophthong is simply a vowel. The word monophthong comes from the old Greek language.

A Diphthong is a vowel that a person has to move his or her mouth into two different positions to make.

  11. Nice cendy 😍 i love your blog,
But, can you explain how can ancient people understand foreign languages before any dictionary ...?

    BalasHapus
    Balasan
    1. Thankyou for the question, Sometimes people can understand foreign language with body language's someone, so if they can't understand what is said but they can understand what they see. So body language is also a language but by the way, it doesn't have a connection with my blog 😊

      Hapus
  12. thanks for your information, can you tell me the other example of diphthong?

    BalasHapus
    Balasan
    1. Of course I can.
There are other example of dipthong such as may, guy, try, bright, sine, grow and others

      Hapus
  13. If i applied in my life, what the advantage for me??

    BalasHapus
    Balasan
    1. The advantages of apply phonetic in life, it can make your pronounce more beautiful, make your knowledge of phonetic not lost, we can know more about sounds and especially about IPA and others.

  14. as a teacher, how to bring the phonetic theory into class that we teach?

    BalasHapus
    Balasan
    1. Thankyou Lil'Daddy's Girls for the question. For me, we can bring the phonetic theory into class with many medias, models and strategies when we teach it such as with video of IPA's sounds, with gives few examples of it, with make a game which has a connection with it, and others. We can use everything media for teaching it as long as it's interesting to students.

  15. cen i want you explain to me about monofthong and diftong more specific

    BalasHapus
    Balasan
    1. Monofthong is single vowel or only one vowel on one syllable for the example you can read in this blog.

And for difthong is double vowel or two vowel side by side on one syllable when you read a word.

      Hapus
  16. Thats not complete obout the phonetic. please give more exlpain about consonant and also give example about it.

    BalasHapus
  17. Thankyou for the question, yeah consonant is not vowel. Consonant refers to letters and consonant is needed to make a word and sentence.
    Example of consonants such as B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P .

    BalasHapus
    Balasan
    1. I know consonant is not vowel but I meant an additional explanation about Consonant.

      Hapus
    2. Actually i'm not get the point what your meant. You said Consonant refer to letter and needed to make a word and sentence so how about vowel not like that too ?

      Hapus
    3. Yeah, consonant refers to letter such as B,C,D,F,G.

Yeah vowel is also needed to make a sentence and consonants are indeed combined with a vowel to form a syllable.

      Hapus
    4. Yes. so that's same right?!
You say make a sentence, so how to make it sentence of the consonant and vowel? because i just know make it a word of both not a sentence.

      Hapus
    5. Yeah, that's same.
Sorry for unclear explanation, I mean, Make a sentence from few words which is based on a combination of the consonants and vowels.

      Hapus
    6. oh oke. So consonants and vowels part of phonetic right? there is else besides of both?

      Hapus
    7. Of course, in phonetic not only about vowels and consonants but also there are articulation, the suprasegmental elements and syllables.

      Hapus
    8. Sure i can.
Articulation, in phonetics, a configuration of the vocal tract (the larynx and the pharyngeal, oral, and nasal cavities) resulting from the positioning of the mobile organs of the vocal tract (e.g., tongue) relative to other parts of the vocal tract that may be rigid (e.g., hard palate). This configuration modifies an airstream to produce the sounds of speech.

The suprasegmental element is the element that accompanies segmental sound. Suprasegmental elements consist of: pressure or stress, tone or pitch, and pauses or joints.

Phonetically syllables “are usually described as consisting of a centre which has little or no obstruction to airflow and which sounds comparatively loud; before and after that centre (…) there will be greater obstruction to airflow and/or less loud sound” (Roach, 2000: 70), example : In the monosyllable (one-syllable word) cat /kæt/, the vowel /æ/ is the “centre” at which little obstruction takes place, whereas we have complete obstruction to the airflow for the surrounding plosives /k/ and /t/.

      Hapus
    9. Omg so long. Can you explain more briefly?

      Hapus
    10. Allright ..
Articulation is This configuration of vocal tract modifies an airstream to produce the sounds of speech.

The suprasegmental element is an element that accompanies sound produced by breathing, speech and vocal cords.

And for Syllables are pieces of sound from a word in one beat or one breath.

      Hapus
    11. Oh i got the point. Thank you for your explanation.

      Hapus
    12. May you give example to make it me more understand?

      Hapus
    13. Yeah, you are wellcome :)

      Sure ..
For the example of suprasegmental elements (stress) : Green House, if you give stress on word Green so it means (Greenhouse) but if you give stress in word House so it means (Green House)

For example of syllables : watermelon there is 4 syllables (wa/ter/mel/on)

    BalasHapus
    Balasan
    1. Actually, you must not learn it but if learn it for increase your knowledge is good for you and benefit of phonetic
and especially about IPA for life, it's useful in computer when you are using microsoft word.
